Recap: Xometry at Fabtech 2019

On November 11-14, Xometry attended FABTECH, the largest metal forming, fabricating, welding, and finishing event in North America. We had the pleasure of interacting with thousands of attendees as one of 1,700 exhibitors.

Suffice it to say, we at Xometry love FABTECH. It was an important event for us this year so we could connect with new and old Manufacturing Partners, showcase our online Xometry Instant Quoting Engine℠, and talk about the new materials available through Xometry Supplies.

Here’s what we talked to FABTECH attendees about this year:

Capacity and Capability Limitations

For many of our customers, Xometry’s on-demand manufacturing network mitigates capacity and capability limitations. FABTECH gave us the chance to have candid conversations with professionals across different backgrounds—engineers, designers, procurement, and even other manufacturers—about a common problem: sourcing work that they cannot complete in-house.

Whether to hit a lead time while their machines are booked or to get custom parts made because of no internal capacity, Xometry engineers and staff discussed with new and old customers how Xometry makes it easy to get instant pricing, lead times, and order parts in 11 different processes with just a 3D CAD file.

Extensive Selection of Manufacturing Processes

To help people understand how Xometry can mitigate capacity limitations, we spread the word about our 11 manufacturing processes. We highlighted our CNC machining services, which include multi-axis CNC machining and sheet metal fabrication as well as our 3D printing service, which include selective laser sintering (SLS), fused deposition modeling (FDM), carbon digital light synthesis (DLS), HP Multi Jet Fusion (MJF), PolyJet, direct metal laser sintering (DMLS), and stereolithography (SLA).

For those interested in injection molding and cast urethanes or silicones, we discussed our tooled manufacturing services. And for some FABTECH attendees who (to our dismay!) get parts made elsewhere but still need secondary post-processing for those parts, we highlighted our new Finishing Services platform, which offers surface treatments, heat treatment, coatings, and part marking.

Getting Jobs as a Manufacturer

At FABTECH, manufacturers who are not plugged into a network reached out to us, since they may experience difficulty securing local and regional jobs and this means seasonal work or down-time for machines. We told them about how Xometry’s Manufacturing Partner Network and Finishing Services platform empower manufacturing businesses to take work that fits them best, and on-demand. This means less time selling and more time doing the job to hit quality parts on-time, again and again.

Delays for Manufacturing Materials and Tools

The last major topic we hit at FABTECH was the issue of experiencing delays in procuring manufacturing materials and tools for their jobs, resulting in increased lead times on the manufactured components too. Xometry staff spoke with manufacturers about Xometry Supplies, which was created to empower all manufacturers with affordable raw materials, cutting tools, drills, and other shop necessities with speedy delivery options.

During FABTECH, Xometry Supplies announced the addition of acetal plastic, a commonly machined polymer, to its stock list. This additional material complements Xometry Supplies’ widely popular cut-to-size selections of Aluminum 6061 bar, plate, and sheet stock. Manufacturing professionals, shop educators, and even hobbyist machinists were raving about Xometry Supplies at FABTECH!
