ABS Plastic for 3D Printing

FDM is the most widely available 3D printing process, mainly used for low-cost rapid prototyping and design verification. ABS is a common thermoplastic with solid mechanical properties and very good impact strength. It has improved performance over PLA but has less defined details.

About ABS

Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS), is a common non-translucent thermoplastic material. ABS is used in a wide range of plastic materials found in our everyday lives. From outdoor furniture to musical instruments to computer keyboards to helmets, ABS plays a key role in making products sturdy and beautiful. It is even used in products like LEGOs, pictured above, as well as corrugated plastic structures and plastic tubing.

ABS is used in both 3D printing and injection molding to create parts at scale. It is a great material to use for manufacturing 3D printed prototypes due to its reasonable cost. It's also easily moldable and is often used to create injection molded prototypes and production parts. This versatile material is a go-to for engineers across industries.

Cost Saving Design Tips

Use less material to save production time. Use even walls to prevent warpage. Add 0.005" to holes to account for shrinkage.
